Then HBO decided they would pick up on the franchise and make Creepshow 3. Creepshow 3 has one main strength: the cover art looks nice. That's right. The only good thing about this movie is the cover art on the DVD case. After that the enjoyment and quality of the movie go straight down hill. And where a hills decline doesn't end is where it makes its final run into hell. (And not in the good way.)
Perhaps I'm getting a little carried away. I didn't come into the movie expecting much. I realized it was a lower budget film and a sequel to two other horror classics. I knew it was a adoption of HBO. Even after all these disclaimers it still manged to disappoint me.
The writing for Creepshow 3 was unrealistic and uninventive and the acting was on par with the script. The stories themselves were never engaging and none of them ever remotely explained why anything was happening. Now, I know in many other horror movies such explanations are left out for suspense and fear effects. However, in this film, weird, horrible, and graphic things seem to happen out of the blue without any rhyme or reason. There is no consistent or sustainable lore for these creatures or the happenings. This doesn't add suspense but instead completely breaks the audiences belief in what is happening. With the time they could have spent making the stories richer they instead made bland jokes that lasted too long. It became more boring and unbearable with each story.
Half the time the characters themselves were never that surprised or shocked about what was happening. It was like everyday routine activities to experience these horrible events. Alice, in the first vignette, doesn't seem shocked at all that her body has mutated and fused into nasty abominations. She simply goes on as normal eating cake and drinking wine. After that it seems that all the characters follow the same nonchalant pattern to this twisted tale. It makes for a rather mediocre and monotonous show. Perhaps the characters are all so rotten that they don't recognize how horrible the events around them are. (Similar to the rich)
I realize that there are horror movies out there (many slasher and exploitation films come to mind) where characters have no morals and no one learns anything. But even those movies have entertainment value for many audience members. This movie couldn't even claim to have the sufficient kills or butchery to fit in with the entertainment value of slasher films. Somehow I watched the entire movie but it was only bearable at best.
